Smart lighting is the gateway drug of the smart home, and I mean that mostly as a compliment. It's affordable, it's genuinely pleasant, and it's where almost everyone has their first "oh, that's actually nice" moment. But it's also where people make their first expensive mistake, usually because nobody explained the three ways to do it and how they differ.
Bulbs, switches, plugs. Same goal, three very different tools. Pick wrong and you'll fight your own lights. Pick right and they fade up at dawn and off at midnight while you forget the technology is even there.
Smart bulbs put the intelligence inside the bulb itself. You screw them in like any bulb, and each one can dim, change color or warmth, and respond to schedules independently. The appeal is granular control, you can have one lamp glowing warm amber while another sits cool and bright. The catch, which I'll come back to, is that they only work when they have power, and a normal wall switch cuts power.
Smart switches replace the switch on the wall instead of the bulb in the fixture. Now the whole fixture is smart, including that five-bulb ceiling fitting you'd never want to replace bulb by bulb. The switch still works as a normal switch for anyone in the room, which family members and guests deeply appreciate. The trade-off: most switches give you on, off, and dimming, not color, and installing one means working in the wall.
Smart plugs sit between the wall outlet and anything that plugs in, lamps, string lights, that floor light in the corner. Cheapest of the three, zero wiring, fully reversible. They can't dim a standard bulb on their own or change color, but for "turn this lamp on and off on a schedule," nothing beats them on value.
Here's the shortcut I use on the job. Match the tool to the fixture and to what you actually want.
The most common mistake I see is buying smart bulbs for a room where people instinctively flick the wall switch, then wondering why the "smart" lights are dead half the time.
A quick note on wiring, since switches involve it. Some smart switches need a neutral wire in the box, and older homes don't always have one. If you're comfortable and informed, some installs are DIY-friendly; if you're at all unsure, or the box looks unfamiliar, hire a licensed electrician. Mains wiring is not the place to learn by trial and error.
Turning a light on from your phone is a party trick. It wears off in a week. The reason to bother with smart lighting is scenes and automation, and that's where it quietly earns its place.
A scene is a saved combination of lights and settings you trigger at once. "Movie" might dim the room and drop the lamps to a low warm glow. "Morning" might bring everything up bright and cool to help you wake. One tap, or one voice command, sets a whole room's mood instead of you adjusting four fixtures by hand.
Automation takes the human out entirely. Lights that come up gently before your alarm. A porch that's lit by the time you get home, tied to sunset rather than a fixed clock, so it tracks the seasons. A hallway that glows softly if motion's detected after midnight, then fades back down. Lights that look lived-in while you're traveling, switching on and off in a believable rhythm so the house never reads as empty.
That last one bleeds into security, and it's one of the most cost-effective deterrents going. A home that looks occupied is a less appealing target, and you've spent almost nothing to create that impression.

And the places that usually don't earn it: closets, the garage you're in for a minute, the spare room nobody enters. Smart-lighting those is money spent on a feature you'll never trigger. Restraint is the whole skill here.
A few hard-won lessons to save you the frustration I've watched others hit.
The power-cut problem. If you use smart bulbs, the wall switch has to stay on or the bulbs lose power and stop responding. Solutions exist, smart switches designed for smart bulbs, or simply training the household to leave certain switches alone, but decide before you buy, not after.
Mixing brands carelessly. Lighting from different ecosystems may not group into the same scenes. Stick to one platform for the lights you want working together, and check compatibility before buying.
Over-automating. Lights that change when you don't expect them to are annoying, not magical. Start with one or two reliable automations, the sunset porch light is the classic, and add more only once the basics feel trustworthy.
Forgetting the humans. Guests and family will use the wall switch on instinct. The best smart lighting still behaves like a normal light to anyone who doesn't know or care that it's smart. If your setup punishes people for flicking a switch, you've over-engineered it.
Get the tool-to-fixture match right, lean into scenes and automation instead of novelty, and keep the manual switch working for the humans in the house. Do that and smart lighting stops being a gadget you show off and becomes something better: a home that's just a little easier to live in, every single evening, without you thinking about it at all.
